Last gasp

Georgia
Former Double H, last year
I managed to track down Wallace Jones. He got out of racing not long after this. He was also a musician, and found that to be much more lucrative.

Grudge match

June 24, 1965
Blue Ridge, Ga.
This shows just how fast things were changing in 1965. Barely a month earlier (see 7/14-16 posts), these cars were running in a super stock meet, carbureted, 3,200 pounds, basically A/FX machines.

AWB in progress. Sorry, don't know the source for this.

World Series results

May 10, 1965
Chattanooga, Tenn.
If you check out the video of the racing at the Double H, you'll see a black 1965 Plymouth killing everyone on the starting line. That's Mr. 4-Speed, Herb McCandless. I'm told he broke something in the driveline in the race for the $1,000 first prize. Huge bucks back then.

Where it all began

May 9, 1965
Calhoun, Ga., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Blue Ridge, Ga.
This meet is what led to the Double H Drag Strip websites -- the first, now-defunct one, and the new one, which is a big-time work in progress, and this site. Click the link to the Double H site, and you can find 3 minutes of remarkable film shot on this day. Results tomorrow.
Also, this is the 500th post on this site.

Back on the backstretch

March 28, 1965
Gastonia, N.C.
We had a post about the '64 race, but no info on the winner, but now we know. A few posts back is a picture of Bessinger's '64, from the Double H Drag Strip in Blue Ridge, Ga.

Mr. Plymouth

That would be Ringgold, Ga.'s Robert Nance.
Not sure of the exact date of this. My clip has June 21 written on it. Seems late for a "new" car, and I don't think he was running two. The '64, driven by James Lake, ran into 1965, and was as tough as Nance's '65 hemi before it went the AWB route.
